Roll up roll up! Another Thursday has sprung upon us and we all know what that means? Yes, you guessed correct, it's time for another MySpace Trawl – our weekly guide on what fine artists are out there.
As you know, we’re leading the fight against bands and random singer songwriters who spam you to be their friend on MySpace. They only do it because they're rubbish and need to look popular, but we can see through that. Over the last few weeks, we’d like to think that we’ve given you some tips to some pretty tasty acts.
However, these have been artists who’ve had a little bit of fame, but needed further prodding by us to maybe go that extra mile. So, until we decide to stop doing so, we’re going to look at some artists so obscure that we bet a whole shiny 10p that you ain’t heard nothing at all by them. We start our adventure in to the unknown with Norwegian indietronica act Sirka Ragnar.
Despite forming in December 2004, Sirka Ragnar have only just got round to getting a record deal, on the tiny and unknown How Is Annie Records label. But, if Sirka Ragnar continue to produce the type of music they have showcased on their MySpace page, the record deals from the majors should be flying in before too long. We have a feeling that Sirka Ragnar could become the new kings of Scandinavian electronic music, perhaps even eclipsing fellow countrymen Royksopp. Two tracks from their debut EP entitled I Am, You Are, He/She/It Is are ready for you to listen to on the Sirka Ragnar MySpace page.
Eim For You lets us in to the world of skittering melodies and broken beats floating beautifully under heartfelt lyrics like “We wait for ever you my friend, we wait forever if that is what it takes.” As the song continues, it breaks down into a lush guitar riff before the glorious sounds of trumpets take over to guide you through the rest of the song. All of the songs on Sirka Ragnar’s MySpace page display a wide variety of sounds, which is always a good thing in our book. Downtempo and sometimes moody-sounding beats can be heard under the happy and cheery melodies which mix together perfectly to create songs that are not only extremely catchy and addictive, but are instantly give Sirka Ragnar their own unique and distinct sound.
It's pleasant to see music coming from all corners of the globe, and we’re not being spoon-fed yet more imported crap from America or cheesy Euro dance music. We all painfully remember the days of the Vengaboys, Sash and other masters of horrible stuff that sounded like fingers down a blackboard.
One Sirka Ragnar track entitled When We Smile is a demo that is also up for listen. Gentle piano strokes over a dark-sounding background is a track that we certainly hope grows in greatness and will feature on a major release in the future. But for now, the only Sirka Ragnar release available out there at the moment is the I Am, You Are, He/She/It Is EP. We’ve already ordered our copy, so why don’t you? On our last visit to this fine page, Sirka Ragnar has had 8401 different people coming to listen to their tracks. We want these numbers boosted, so click below to let yourself in for a right old musical treat.
